News brief: Patent awarded to Genasys
Genasys was recently granted a patent for "System
and Method for Naming Geographic Areas", something
Genasys otherwise calls Fractal Models. Fractal models offer
a method for describing a given geographic area using a
name that will both make sense to the the information user
and be appropriate to the size, shape and context of the
area. Although there may be other uses, Fractal model systems
are of principal benefit in the support of location-based
mobile services where a meaningful way to refer to a geographic
area has obvious value. Network-based positioning systems
like Cell-ID offer varying levels of precision depending
upon the density of antennas in the area where the mobile
is being located. Fractal models take the area found by
the positioning system and, comparing it with geographic
data of the area, provide an appropriate name for the area
given it's size, shape, and location.
